Totally pissed off!...its that part in the process for me, where everthing begins to go wrong! Today I was doin well, had my chess board, robot/robotic hand an chess pieces...then 3ds max decides to fuck up and loose my flippin work, after saving sooooo MANY times. Now it wont open and has become a currupted file. seriously its da wrong time to be messin me around, i'm slow as it is :P

My sports character...

This here is a female cyborg

The race will be in a labrynth type maze, with hurdles/obstacles/traps inside. Each competitor will race to the middle, grab the item from the middle of the maze and head towards the exit ..if they can find it. First one out, with item wins.

I chose to do a cyborg, not only to fit the brief of bringing futuristic, but to design and create a character that symbolizes athletics who have disabilities and still play sports (paralympic games), mostly amputee's. Here's an example..

In this animation I wanted to show that sports can be acheived by more an less anyone, nowadays men dominate the scences too much, so that's why I chose to do a female amputee... who run the world..Girrrls :)

This month I've got soo much to keep up with, and I feel 10x behind. Not sure where I stand, or need to go next :P

One of my favourite blogspots that I find really inspirational, is the Character Design blogspot. Just taking a look at what other animators/illustrators are doing, is a good way to acknowledge and respect other great artists. what also fascinates me is watching the documentary video's, you get an insight of what really goes on behind scenes and it kind of rubs the competition in your face, but at the same time it all excites me ..So today I "thought of you" and decided to share this video with others, who are yet to see this animation. Summer, Summer, Summer Tiiime Pt:2

My summer break was dry lol, with not much to do but draw my life away. I was back home with the rents, in a city I can no longer stand. I will admit that I hadn't accomplished much over the holidays, with no funds, and the need of certain devices/software, I didnt get to develop my skills or produce any work. Instead, I was mainly trying to complete any unfinished drawings I had left to do, while outside enjoying most of the summer days.

Around the beginning of August, I start a new project. An artist had asked me to create a animation music video. He wanted me to create a comic style animation, for his new track that is being released soon. Keeping things brief I'll give ya'll a lil taste of what going on:

Today's session was to built the hand of a robot. The idea here is to understand the process of creating a working hierarchy, for rigging and making movement. I'd say I'm getting there, its the part after you've linked all objects to follow the first objects, that confuses me :P ... But as I said I'm getting there, more practise needed. And soooo... I'm back after an hectic summer, with much to tell and share, but I'll keep it brief .

Before the break things didnt go very well (shall got go into detail here), but it was peak times. Alot had been lost, and alot had been lefted behind. But overall, I have made room for the new, and being back at uni now I'm feeling the high spirits ahead. I have new projects and feel quite confident about things going on at the moment.

At uni, we have all been given 3 projects, and already im ready and excited to get all creative on their ass (reffering to the work and not the tutors :D), will share my ideas of each project in another post. But for now I'll leave you with this:

God knows that I'm blessed, so I will get by, and make the most out of my life, aim for the sky...Fly pass the moon, sit with the stars, show them my art, but I never could forget my piece of showing them my heart...

These are my creature designs in mind. Think I will combine the two to make one because I can't seem to choose one to work with.

I have added a gravestone to add depth to the atmosphere of the envirnoment, emphasising the cycle of life and death. eg. The scenery of trees and flowers indicate the sense of living things, and the gravestone to remind us of the ones we lost and love.

Relating to the Film Inspiration post, I had said that while watching 'A Bugs Life' I managed to answer a few questions, which I concidered if i was to hit a problem.

Today lecture was indeed a few people from e-on, asking for our help as young designers, to create an intersting video for their company. Has much as I would like to be apart of this project, I dont really have a team. Besides I have never spoken to any of my classmates, so I think it will be a little awkward to approach them now. You may think i'm wrong but im a very shy person, so trying to get someones attention doesnt quite work for me..so maybe next time I'll have grown much more confidence and get more involved in opportunies.

Back 2 basics

OK so it seems I have gone back to selecting one of the films off the given list, the reason for this is that I can not find a script to work from. So instead I have chosen to do 'Frankenstein', which I will be sticking to as I need to move on to designing.

Although I really wanted to do 'the illusionist, I think choosing 'Frankenstein' I can still create this scenery I have in mind. To be honest a lot of my setting ideas for 'the illusionist' can still be used for frankenstein, they both include an obsession, a principle of life, chemistry/philosophy, and both films include an fascinated creation or creations in the case of 'the illusionist'.

So now, as I dont quite remember the story of frankenstein I'll have to re-watch the film to get a good idea of what's involved and get a good understanding of the film, whilst also capturing any emotions I can incorporate into my animation.

Right so I now have a few films in mind, here I will state the names of each and give a short description of why I would like to interpretate this film.

My first choice is 'The Illusionist'.
great film, very interesting...As well as this film having a reasonable storyline to work from, I do enjoy the settings of this film.
I think this will be my chosen choice because I can connect it with animation being made up of illusions

second is the animé 'Bleach'
an animé series I have officially become obsessed with, and has everything I'm looking for when it comes to expression, emotion and conflict.

OK so there is another brief...to interpretate a script. I found this very interesting to undertake as it is my first time approaching this type of task. Although I don't have to choose any of the scripts given there are three to start with, which are: The Matrix, Fantastic Voyage and Frankenstein.

From the films stated above, I have only seen two of them, The Matrix being complex to fully understand and Frankenstein which is reasonably interesting. So for now,I consider to choose a script of my own choice.

"Of Bots and Bananas" Project

For the "of Bots and Bananas" project, I have been looking at different kinds of things that can contribute towards the inspiration for designing, from films, adverts and videos to books, art/drawings and clothes.

I would like to start off with what first came into mind and how I developed from there. the first thing to come into mind was Tranformers, by adding my own interest (which in this case Skating), this lead me to acknowlege the Citroen C4 tranformer car advert with the robot ice skating.

After everything has been confirmed and designs had been official, I remembered seeing a few robot videos on youtube a few years back, that would be of great help for this project. These videos would help me with the production/animation side of things, while focusing only on movement. Being scared of what will come next, these robots were not only amazing, but they seemed very believable and become fascinating to watch....enjoy

But instead, to supprt my project idea, i would prefer little more speed within the movement of my robots. something more like this...

This song has to be the song of the week! and the song of the month, as it was her birthday this month (16th)...I find this lady amazing, and although I didn't know her, her death had affected me and a lot of other people, and in this video I truly feel DMX's pain.

This song here was Aaliyah's last recording before her death, as you can see she didn't get to make a video for this, but all her close friends and family put together this video as a respected little send off, and has become the most loved song/video. Aaliyah is my idol (still is!), and you'll never be forgotten!!! x

This trailer is more like a music video, so I thought I'd post the two up!

Everyone back home was asking me had I watched or heard of 1day (apparently it was a recent made film), I was like nope!...so they suggested that I watch it, so I decided to watch this film, mainly because its based in my home town Birmingham!! yay...I watched it yesterday while at uni doing some work....and I must say it was entertaining, especially the words/phases they use throughtout the film lol (amazingly enough I haven't been home for that long, that their accent seems weird almost!)...my opinions though, I thought it kind of followed kid/adulthood (just a little!)..and a few influences taken from America (you know the whole bandana, rep your endz thing!) but hey, I recognised a few faces from school, and I think that fiasco (the girl that raps/mc's while chasing that guy!) is really trying to doing her thing :-)...I would also like to say that I didnt think it was this serious in brum, I mean i'm use to seeing the whole drug and music scene, (I once grew up in these areas!) but the fact that you'll have your own good people ready to switch on you, just because of money and the risk of their reputation is weird, (especially if you become a close friend to their family) but I guess this happens everywhere right!

Being a BIG DnB fan, this tune is amazing. It seems to effects me every time! in a good way that is, especially when the beat drops (1:29) I get on a hype! Hehe...No matter what type of shitty mood I'm in, I'll be more than happy after listening to this song!-FACT!!!... And it's another one of those working tracks, where you put your headphones on and your away with the fairies in the creative world, I'd say it provides me with the energy I need to proceed! - (but I could say that about a majority of DnB tracks though!) lol

I admit this short is really nice, its very toughing and I think its the music that gives it that emotional feeling. The piano playing, attracts your attention and you instantly focus on the story of the animation. A Slight issue!

Since all the chaos I had with my work being lost, and trying to redo and hand it in on time for deadline, I've had a problem sleeping at a sensible time! I seem to be rolling into bed at 8am or 9.30am in the morning, then I'll wake up again at 1pm , 2pm!.. some days I don't even go to sleep because I don't seem tired!...it's been like this all the way through the Christmas holiday, but the fact that I start back at Uni later on today is going to be a problem, as I'm still up at 5:12am unable to sleep. :-/ ..man this sucks!

9 (2005)...The Animated Short!

This is a fascinating short, and I practically like the style its created in.
This short was created by Shane Acker (2005) as a student project, but after Tim Burton had saw and admired it's artistic outlook, it was decided that a feature length would be created.

Though the short is said to be out first, I had watched the film first then the short! from the likes of things though, I would say its just a quick break down of the movie, or vice versa the movie is an extension to the short creating a more understandable story by adding dialogue. If there was one thing to catch my attention I would say it was the storyline, it seemed very engaging and something to consider seriously. But saying that I enjoyed everything about this short and the film.

What or who is ALKO Mii?

ALKO Mii is my logo name I created a few months before attending Nottingham Trent. It was thought of through a series of designs, considered for my own purpose. I came up with ALKO Mii because I didn't really like my previous title (Brand87), the meaning was too plan and simple, so I decided to create another, which is now ALKO Mii.

What does ALKO Mii stand for?

Well basically ALKO stands for "All.. Light.. Kontakz.. Owns" the word Kontactz (pronounced contacts) is an actual nickname for myself. Another way of understanding this title altogether is if I say, I am the light source, or I am shining! It's nothing to do with gaining power or seeming powerful, but instead indicates the overwhelming energy, over the belief of me being so creative.

"Mii" just stands for "me" but written differently. 'Mii' makes sense when the whole word is said together:- 'ALKO Mii', because ALKO is a disguise for my middle name 'Brandi' which is known to be a alcholic drink. So you could say 'ALKO' is some kind of abbreviation for the word alcohol, but adapted to mean something from my point of view! 'ALKO' was later extended , when the question was often asked 'what is or who is ALKO? and the answer would always be simple 'it's me!' (Mii) :-) ..make sense!?

How you planning to start your career?

Well at the moment I'm beginning (and have already done) to produce posters, artwork and t-shirt designs, which I'm willing to sell. There are ideas of other areas such as other clothing designs and designing 3D character in the ALKO Mii style, but they will be done later down the line. This is just to deliver my style to the audience, while gaining recognition, so that when I start my animation career, those who have my artwork will be familiar with my productions (although I intend to establish different styles!).

A Note From The Fashion Scene

As some of you maybe aware of, I am well into fashion and the fashion industry, and had successfully completed a fashion course a few years back. while attending, I was often asked why do I want to do fashion, or sometimes asked why am I doing fashion? (like I wasn't capable! although this isn't what they meant by the question). I would simply answer and say I was fed up of seeing myself in simply clothing, and when I had purchase anything more sophisticated in style/ design I use to hate seeing others who had the same as me (I still do now, especially when they don't wear it right, it gets to more angry!) so my ambition was to design my own clothing, mainly for myself and close relatives. I later decided that I would design and produce limit editions, or even prototypes! And the fact that I was going into animation, I decided to design clothing for characters.

So whenever I get any ideas or thoughts on a collection, I have to jot them down. I get a lot of ideas in my head while I'm trying to sleep, and although I don't do fashion anymore I still have to get up and plan the ideas out, because that passion is still there. So my purpose of this post is that, now, although I have moved on from the fashion scene, it's an interest/hobby that I still have knowledge and skill in.

Now I have a great ideal of designs which I'd hate to waste so the idea is to create some of the designs i have in mind. I spoke to a good friend from college, who was also on the same course doing fashion, and asked him if he would like to create a collection with me, as I don't have the full time and focus needed to do this. He happily said yes and we should be getting together around summer time!...he said this is when he will have free time (as he is also at uni, studying fashion), and it seems like the best time for me too, besides I'll have enough time to get everything in order eg. patterns, materials.
...I'll keep you updated on my garment designs and sketches, and other things that seem relevant to this matter.

Ren and Stimpy Memories

I can actually remember watching "The Ren and Stimpy Show" as a kid (I would probably say I had been watching since the new episodes were aired on nickelodeon - 1991), saying this, I can't believe my parents actually allowed me to watch these!...the fact that I don't remember full episodes just little clips of different episodes, isn't the point, watching these animated series, now, seem a little too much for kids, I would say!...

...as a young one I was always puzzled about what Ren and Stimpy were as animals, and just thought they were made up creatures (although my mind was saying that Stimpy was a cat, but with out whiskers an a tail this was hard to believe), the fact is Ren is a Chihuahua and Stimpy is indeed a manx cat (well I was half right then, and that explains the non-existent tail!). A lot people didn't find those two amusing (mainly because of the cartoons imagery and cartoon violence), but I did. I found the animation more interesting then anything, the detail they went into when something gross would appear on screen was fascinating, because no other cartoon I watched did that.

so about a year back now, I decided to re-watch some of the episodes, to refresh my mind on some of the storytelling (although as a kid I don't think I paid much attention to the storyline anyway!)...and one that I found really really amusing is called "Sven Hoek" its about a relative of Ren's coming to visit!...this is part2 of the episode!..the funniest part is near the ending when Ren goes off into his psychotic moment (I especially enjoy the demonstration he gives, of what he is going to do to their arm, the expressions here are interesting!)...pls watch it, its hilarious!

A conspiracy-thriller film, featuring Jim Carrey!...(and automatically you think Jim Carrey!...conspiracy- thriller!...What?!)...

Ever since I have watched this film (around two years ago now), things have been different (well I think of things differently!)...lol kind of crazy I know, but it makes you wonder, what if! and the fact that I was born 23/11/1987...doesn't make things any better!...(because 9-1=8, 8+8+7= yep..23!!!)..and also the three names I mainly use each have 6 letters!!-(Brandi Symone Newell),(making 666!!!...I'm not evil!!!) even sept 11th 2001 adds up to 23 (Work it out yourselves it isn't hard maths!)....can't admit it's not creepy right?! hhmmmm?! lol...

...Besides that (and the bad ratings that this movie gets!) got to say this film (from my POV) is really interesting. In general, a lot is said about the number 23, alot of negative stuff,(negative to some, positive for others) and this film seems to reflect on that slightly... would you say the constant use of the number 23 is a coincidence, mathematical reasoning or paranoia?...

...They say it's a film about obsession and conspiracy and that not enough thought had gone into developing a good movie! well maybe this was to throw viewers off track of belief in such things...hmmm my opinion again (but!...it doesn't really matter what I say! Why? because my position isn't strong enough!)...but what I would like to state is don't consider it being non sense, in stead admit you were confused!...I would say there's enough style and plot twisting's, intriguing enough to keep you watching!...let me know what you think!

These shoes are AMAZING!!!!....wow!...but the fact their only a concept is devastating!...alot of people writing statements say they wouldn't see women wearing these shoes!!! well consider me the first!...I wish that these shoes were apart of my life! arrghh!...will my dreams come true?!

Alma Short Animation...Short Review

Just seen this animation short called 'Alma' Written and Directed by Rodrigo Blaas, at first it seemed so creepy because you know something wrong is going to happen, but I can't help the fact that this is a nicely done short animation movie. I found this piece really interesting, especially the storytelling, it catches your attention so quickly as your determine to know what's going to happen next. From my opinion, a few of the designs seemed as though they were inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, seen as the creators are based in Spain and me being such a big fan of the Art Nouveau movement, it's most likely to be the work of Antonio Gaudi that had inspired this short. (well it is my opinion!)...have a look.

Wow this looks amazing, this is a film I am definitely look forward to watching!..From the weird/creepy/crazy designs created I just know that Tim Burton would be involved , only he could make this film look so incredible...the animation looks great! I really admire this guys work, and so does Johnny Depp by the looks of things :-)

Another Character Idea!...

Right, today I had drawn another character; something came into mind so I had to draw it out. Haven’t thought of a full storyline or synopsis yet, but it will be about a boy with an ginger afro, who gets bullied at junior school for being too urban, but although he is nerdy in his ways, his style seems to pays off when everything goes his way. Ideas in mind are saying that this would be a great character, if I create it in 3ds Max… :-) will post the images later, when I have access to a scanner!

Back On The Scene

Well it is known that I haven’t posted anything for a while, my apologies for this… So what have I been up to? Well I’ve been doing a few things, despite the fact I didn’t succeed in my uni work (a looong story, I’m not proud of!). I mean, I always do my best in whatever I undertake, but this year with bad luck was taking the piss!!!...I will not stress over this now because it’s in the past, (although I was more than stressed at the time!) so I’ll move on with a pretend smile :-) and my head high and continue to state what I have been doing and what I’m willing to do in the xmas break.

So far I have written (in rough) a few synopsis's, designed a few characters and in the making is another comic strip, the storytelling stages were completed just before we started back at uni, from then till now I've been working on the designing stages. I will fill you in with more info and images of these later on (as I don’t have a scanner!). What I would like to mention is that the main character from each story is in development, and as I said early I will keep you updated on these. The comic strip I have created is a follow up of the comic I did for my identities project, the comic is called ‘Past Resident’ and is basically about my past of how I used to be and events that became my permanent memories. There are two more comics which will follow these, which are called ‘Who Am I?’ and ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’, but I’ll post info on these next time. In the comic ‘Past Resident’ I’m always on skates as it is one of my favourite hobbies, and based on this I have create yet another bunch of characters (all girls) and called them the ‘Hott Sk8terz’ (not apart of the comic Past Resident!)…yes yes I know, might need to change this title! Hmmm well depending on how the feel of things go.

This is my chosen idea for my interactive box, just a rough at the mo. I chose to use my room as the showcase/box because it is the best place that represents me, it holds all my belongings and memories (this could be both personal and random)and becomes the place I spend most of my time in. It took me a long time to think of a descent idea for this area as it becomes the main attraction to the package, using my room was initailly my first idea, but my ideas became frustrating after a while because I didnt know how i wanted my room to look or what view or perspective it would be in, and although I don't think it's that attractive it will have to do! as I am spending to much time thinking!

Recent Stages: Character Description

I created a size guide for my avatar, basically it just shows various sizes of my avatar and informs what size I will use for my chosen design. I am likely to create my avatar in a small size, to indicate my height (because I'm small) and exaggerate on this by creating a chibi character.

My idea is to exaggerate on the things that become obvious to others, things I'm known for (eg.wearing a hat most of the time!)... making obvious the things I am known to do, have, wear even say!

I wanted my avatar to be different (visually) from the real me, to indicate that I am different in style and humour, then I would portray my personality through this chosen avatar, by creating interactive story. But i have not decided on this has yet!

Google watchers!!!

I've heard about this google street thing, and how you can view your house-virtually!. As part of my identity package, I was thinking to use my street/road to represent my ends (or where I'm from as others would say!), so I thought I would check it out...

...I entered a postcode and I was amazed on what I was seeing...at first I was happy on seeing my house on the web, as I am missing my home town and peoples (made me reminisce)...but then seeing it in so much detail and good quality, I began to find it scary!!... There is a glimpse of my house above!

...I find it amazing how this world is so determined to watch everyones movements, although this not live footage. In its virtual design it makes you feel as though your the camera roaming around the streets. It's scary because I feel I am being watched, though this isn't the cased, I almost feel intimidated!...Technology is changing so rapid, we all assume its for the best, when in fact, so much changes is all for a negative downfall...I ask myself do I really want to see the future?!

I wanted to present a dark side and a light side, to indicate my background and my future. I have made it so it states two things instead of one, I created it in a way that the past seemed dull and my future seems bright (mainly based around my background and what I have achieved so far), but it also represents me as a person, being negative and positive at the same time, and overall combines my emotions and feelings.

On the dark side I wanted to place things that were negative, whether it was a situation, interest or thought. I also wanted to include things I hate (such as time!) and things that become important to me but I hide it inside (such as family situations, and the Scotland flag).

On the light side I wanted to indicate my interests, hobbies and abilities, things that make me happy and think positive towards. So I included CD’s (music), anime and inspiration. Overall I think this mood board represents me quite a bit, and feel happy in what I have created.

I used the city for the background because not only do I come from a big city, but cities are known to be very busy, and so my mood board represents that of a busy lifestyle.

...the moodboard I used here is not the original! I have lost the original piece somehow, and decided to give you what I called my 'backup bredrin' lol... well people i see it as a sign from god..maybe his sayin im showing you too much and you don't need to kno it! but hey, this one is just as interesting..!

DANCING
•I consider myself a dancer, so I am thinking to perform a dance routine or even choreograph a dance performance. I mostly freestyle,but its all street dancing, so if I intend to do a dance it would be in a urban environment.

•Another idea I have is to incorporate my interests into the dance routine I will perform, hopefully this will contribute towards portraying my interests as well as my abilities.

PIXILATION-white board animation
•I have a passion for animation, so I have considered on doing a pixilation piece for this. The idea for the animation is to animate or even advertise my chosen identity logo in some way. I am also creating a model of my avatar (before I create it in 3Ds Max), so I intend to create a pixilation for this too.

•Another Idea is I also write poetry, so I was thinking to write a poem about myself, obviously, but have a note pad jotting down my words, and maybe me speaking over it.

•Well i love fashion!!! so Here I was thinking to use some footage of my fashion show I did whilst at college, it was recorded by my dad, but I’m still thinking about this idea because he can’t video for shit, so the footage isn’t that great!!!...i think this idea would be great as the collection i had designed reflects my personality and style! an is something i am incorporating into my package.

My Creativity

Last night I had a great talk with one of my family members, and the information gathered in the subject we were talking about became useful for the identities project. Some how we got on a topic about me and where I’m going with this passion I have. Then I was asked what is it all for? The same question I was asked in the seminar!

I answer, it’s mainly for me but there becomes a number of reasons, obviously it’s an interest but has progressed to another level, enabling it to be more than just an interest and more of something that lives within me. I believe I am gifted, and it’s not about me wasting the opportunity or not, but I want to see how far I can or will go to achieve my goal. There becomes a number of reasons simply because has I grew up with this passion to be so creative, I found other important reasons for me to obtain this passion.

One of the reasons is within my family (meaning mom, dad, and siblings) no one really has a nice living, no one is doing what they wanted to grow up and do, they are just doing the basics to survive (hustling others might call it). I mean, where I’m coming from wasn’t an easy living, but it wasn’t that bad either, were surviving but not in the right way. Thinking of the hard times I had ever been in and the hard times we still go through always provides me with the energy to continue. So yeah, you would say I am driven by my past, situations, issues and memories, because they all contribute to the cause of this passion that bubbles inside me.

Another one of the reasons is to prove my dad wrong, his playing this quite clever game and I must admit its working very well. His thoughts are me having kids at a young age and will not succeed in my studies. He doesn’t think I can’t do it, because he knows I’m dedicated, but instead he thinks that something stupid will throw me off track, like having kids for instance. I have already proved part of his thoughts wrong, because he didn’t think I would make it to uni, (he thought I would have them that early!). I am the only one close within that has made it this far. But the point of his game is, he doesn’t want to get his hopes up so he says things he knows I will react upon. By being negative his making me want to prove I can do it, for my own good, and from his view, if I fail, inside he will be disappointed but on the outside he would say I told you so.

Although gaining qualifications does take part in it as well, that was mainly to help progress where I really intend to go, I spent so much time exploring different areas that seemed creative to me (now I feel so old at uni!), just to see what I was capable of doing but most of all to see where most of my skills and creativeness lie. Still, my creativeness lies in a lot of different areas but I have to be dedicated to one, and I have made that decision already, but I know if I don’t make it in the area I intend to chose or I lose interest I know I have back up and can count on my other options.

Back 2 basics-

For the last week I have been in hiding really, I had injured my ankle at football so I decided to give it a rest. Still in pain, I went back to lectures this week, thought I was wasting too much time (and time is never on my side, so I need as much as possible). This weekend I was planning to go back home to visit my family, (since I didn’t get to see them over the Christmas!) but I figured I’m behind a little and need to get back on track, so my trip isn’t going happen again!...

Thoughts and Thinking’s

Right, I have an idea in mind for my showcase/box but don’t know if it’s too simple (in style that is), as far as my identity goes I can confirm that I am not simple! So do I need to change this to suit the projects brief? Not to make things difficult or to state what I have in mind is wrong, but to show as part of my identity I’m not a simple person! Well I guess it is up to me of what decision I make and besides it is the first idea I had come up with, so more development is needed anyway. I suppose it would make more sense to develop this Idea I have in mind and to do a lot more research in this area.

Logo- I had already designed a logo, but I was told to design another, which I don’t mind doing. It gives me the chance to develop another series of logos that become more ideal to me and the project. My logo has not yet been used or seen, so what I’m thinking to do anyway is keep the name of the logo and just incorporate different shapes, styles, compositions along with colour.

Showcase/box ideas- overall I think that this part of the project will be the most difficult sector to achieve, as it becomes the most important part to represent our ideas/elements. It has to be eye catching and attractive, entertaining and meaningful whilst also creating an environment that somehow represents you.

For some reason I want the use of dices shown in my showcase, I must admit I am obsessed with the objects and some how they need to be included! They have no purpose really, apart from me being obsessed with their existence. I had developed a logo for myself in the past, which included dices and could some how use it by incorporating it into the showcase/box idea, well…actually I have come up with an idea already and will definitely develop this to see what will happen and if it will be relevant for the project.

Avatar- I have designed a few characters of myself before, so I shouldn’t really have any problems when it comes to creating another, matter of fact, I have created a few other designs already, and I like quite a selection of them. The only problem I will have is representing it as a 3D character! I also have to think about my avatars behaviour to portrait my personality, in which I am thinking to create some kind of story.

Mind-maps- a few mind maps were created just to confirm an outline of myself. The first mind map was just to indicate what identity and personality meant to me, whilst also stating their definition. I wrote down some words that can becomes apart of the identity package, such as nicknames, interests, lifestyle and birthmark/s. Stating these areas, using all of them will be over doing it for my character I think, so what I intend to do is choose the one’s that defines me the most and develop their positions.

Another mind map I created was about me being described by others, using key words that most described me visually and physically. Recreating this mind map I separated it into two areas one area completed by people that are closer to me and seem to know me well (Family), the other, I had asked a few people at football (NTU) what they thought about me and jotted these down, making a mind map from it after.

Mood board- my first mood board is just combined with a series of things I like and what identifies me as a person. The next one I will create will define emotion, style and an understanding of how I work, and how I am portrayed. I will also create another mood board for my showcase/box, just to get some ideas of what I might include in the showcase/box and obviously include its theme/environment style.

Just to gather more information about myself, I asked a few people in my family, those how are really close to me, to list a few words that describe me. Using their words that they had described me with, I made a mind map. I decided to do this after the lecture we had, on portraying ourselves as creative practitioners. Our task was to create a so called ‘Pecha Kucha’ on PowerPoint and to deliver this to the group. We all had to deliver sum sort of information about ourselves, and by what we had saw within these presentation, we had to summarise some kind of conclusion of each person. Not happy of the results I had recieved (though I did expect it), I decided to ask those closer to me, and compare them both.

Mainly all of the words used to describe me I would totally agree with. They all sum me up as a person, describing my personality and style.

My bad! ...but hey I gathered!

Today I couldn’t make it to my usual timed seminar, so I missed out (well actually I was there just not in the class…hmmm!!)…I decided to attend the seminar after mine but didn’t make in time, (well I was only 10 mins late) so I stood outside listening (crazy I know! I didn’t want to interrupt the class, plus I felt a bit embarrassed for not informing anyone of my arrival). I read the information posted on the now and had already done the task asked. So because I didn’t get the chance to say my say I thought it was a good idea to post it on my journal.

And I didn’t want to post this really, but I just wanted to inform others (staff mainly) that I was there (kind of) and gathered what was discussed within the seminar.

We were asked to write down any books we had read, relate to the SPP module or even the Multimedia course. I will admit I have not read any books that have been written down or suggested by our tutors, but I have read other books that relate to what we are doing.

The books I have read, have given me great advice and information, especially Good Essay Writing (which I found very useful for helping me on my next essay) and the complete animation course book (which states a few important information within the animation sector, such as character development and how to use 3d and 2d programs). I had enjoyed reading these books and do believe that these books will help me develop my skills and help demonstrate my knowledge. I find these books (mainly the animation ones) very inspirational and gives me the energy to research more within this area.

I had a flick through some other books while in the library, and jotted down a few notes so I could go back and borrow when the time is right. At the moment they don’t seem that important to me, so I have left them for a later date but I still think they will become useful, matter of fact very useful to help develop my skills and knowledge in within my chosen area/pathway. My research pt.1-(Going deep) - 02/09

I was doing some research about self-concept and I found this web site that made me day dream for half an hour repeating “that is so me!”. The web site address is www.selfesteem2go.com, but had gone through a link on the Wikipedia site, that lead me to the current page about self-esteem. The site contained a lot of useful information and also provides some great advice, on other areas such self-confidence, stress and mind power.

The site is mainly used to build up those with low self esteem, whilst giving you an understanding of who you are, and how to come over any difficult circumstances, such as self-esteem, positive thinking and advice about building up your confidence. Although this site delivers information on how to be a happier person and persuades you to change the negative you, for me, it made me understand myself a lot better, sim

ply because the way they had explained the information was as if they knew me, but relating to many of their examples it felt like they were describing me personally. It’s not as if I don’t know myself, but some of the information they had given made me realize, why I am the way I am and I now think I can sum up how I really am, inside and out.

So the first area I had read was about self esteem, and this page just gave a brief outline of what the word self esteem meant. Self esteem is basically what we think of ourselves, these things can be positive or negative, either way they contribute to the way we are and create ways to how we react. An example they had given was

“If I see myself as ugly, it could be due being told I was ugly as a child. Since I believe I am ugly, I don’t take care with my appearance - why should I? I dress in a slovenly fashion or forget to comb my hair or brush my teeth. I keep subconsciously making myself more like my negative opinion of who I am.

If I think of myself as stupid, I may go out of my way to not be asked questions. I may keep silent when my opinion is sought, not because I have nothing to offer, but because I believe I have nothing. I prevent myself from growing and learning out a certainty that I will fail!”

I must admit, though it’s not in these same areas but still on the same type of level, I do believe I relate to these in some way. I allow myself to think negative towards myself, or sometimes fade in the background because I don’t think I’m good enough. But I did become angry in some way, not towards others but towards the situation and the feeling I had gained, so I began to change slightly and started to question my thoughts, and that’s the reason why I think I also relate to the second quote! Which states;

“I can change the view of myself, but it takes time and determination - and above all else a recognition that my concept can be mistaken. The trick is to start being aware of the inner voice that speaks to me - and questioning it when it tries to drag me down.

If I notice that I tend to generalize - if a lot of my inner dialogue starts with the words ‘I am so (ugly, useless, clumsy)’ then I need to stop and challenge that concept! I need to ask myself why I think those things, and prove myself wrong.

I need to set myself up to succeed.”

And although I still have a lack of confidence held within me and still think negative at some moments, I think I have change to a better person throughout my strange thinking’s, but still I am in the stages of developing myself and my skills. By the way there is one thing I know about me, that seems positive! And that is I will never give up!...Now enough of being serious already, I’ll get back to work and I’ll leave you guys to it too. (Oh yeah, I just remembered that was apart of the work! lol)

An interesting lecture- Thu 5^th Feb

I really enjoyed the lecture we had on Tuesday, though I wasn’t going to go because I was thinking what I had prepared wasn’t going to be good enough to show. Our task was to create and show a presentation created on PowerPoint that included 20 slides lasting a minute, which had to finally sum us up as a creative practitioner. Didn’t quite understand the reason for this task until we had the lecture, but although I wasn’t expecting what we had done within the lecture, I must admit it was enjoyable. It was great to understand where other people’s interests lied and what, we, as creative practitioners shared in common or even differed from.

Watching everyone’s presentation individually, we had to take notes, writing down what we thought about that person and what sector in multimedia do we think they would most want to get into. Based on the information gathered from each individual, most of my thoughts about them were right.

When each person had to comment on themselves, a lot of them didn’t seem bothered what other people had thought and said (well that’s the impression I received), but when it was my turn, I became concerned that people would get the wrong idea. I must admit, when it came to me I already knew what was expected, but learning a lot within this lecture only gave me more ideas of what people, who don’t know me well, really think of me, not in a bad way (though it can be), but in a way that makes me think, who is this person I am portraying. I began to understand myself through self image and understand why others around me don’t understand me in certain situations, while being judged by my image. This hasn’t been the first time being judge by my image, (the whole point of my interactive narrative was to show this example) it just shows me what people around me really think and, where I stand in between that.

This lecture has sure given me some ideas for my avatar, and one thing to bear in mind is to include or exaggerate on areas that seem very common or recognizable to the public, things that people recognize me by/know me for.

I am beginning to enjoy being on vSide, it is an environment that seems very stylish and seems as though it was created for a specific age group, though I state this, there is a lot of different age groups within this virtual environment. It seems to be more about meeting new people, looking fresh and having fun, but I must say, making money is always the case in virtual worlds and in this case the way money is made, which in vSide is called vBux, is by opening a store and selling new and exclusive gear (clothes People!), well.. I ‘m not completely sure if its just clothes others are making money from, but that’s all I seem to see, garments, garments and more garment stores.

I don’t really speak to a lot of people only the ones that are there to help really. At the moment I’m just trying to use to the program and explore different types of areas.

I definitely prefer this virtual environment compare to Second Life, it’s less complicated, though there is still a lot to absorb. I say I prefer this environment simply because I can experiment and explore quicker here than I can in Second Life, here I can say they have shortcuts (well thats what I see it as!) eg. in Second Life you can create objects and/or even build properties and land, on Vside you are standardly given a property but you can decorate it as you like. I find that vSide is more my style and I can also listen to my type of music, while roaming the streets (but this seems to change when ever I enter a store).

Second time I went into vSide I think they had updated the program from the last time, because I don’t remember them giving me information on how to use to the program.

To get use to the basics they told me to follow a yellow brick road that leads me to different places, such as a boutique and a few clubs. Before I entered any stores I was speaking to a few people. I don’t know what the joke was, but one lady was rolling on the floor in laughter!-(when you put lol, which means laugh out loud or lmao-laughing my ass off, apparently they perform the actions to them)

I entered a boutique and was able to purchase some clothing to define my character a bit more. When you enter the store/s they look normal, you walk around and absorb things around you, but when you want to buy anything you have to click on the icon, that looks like a shopping basket. The next picture below, placed on the right handside is what the boutique looks like after you have click on the icon.

I decided to have another on the online environment thing, so I registered to Doppelganger’s Vside virtual world, and already I am liking the environment. It seems to be easy to handle and understand, and it doesn’t seem to focus too much on the developing stages of the chosen avatar.

What I like about this virtual world is that you can check out any profiles of people who exist there, although its bound to be fake information, it gives you a description of the character before you want to add them as a friend. It kind of reminds me of MySpace, the way you have a profile, add friends and also add photos and relevant information. The difference is that you walk around being the character you created from the profile.

The character I have developed slightly, does not look like me, but I have dressed her the way I would dress. And hopefully the way I am dressed should create some kind of character towards my personality.

Today I have managed to do a few stuff, like take photos of my avatar to add to profile, receiving Vside points for exploring the environment and I also attended an event. I went to the event and it was a house party basically, but I left soon after because I was not really doing much there. I spent most of my time on Vside wondering round areas trying to find stores that would pull my attention. But so far so good, not great an all , but its virtual world is a better suggestion than Second Life, for anyone new to virtual worlds that is!

....and maybe ill try out Second Life for a Second time, after i've figure out the basics and got used to being in virtual worlds...(an il upload mre pics after!)

My diary of the unborn avatar - (Second Life)

At first I was excited to get a chance to explore a virtual world, mainly to absorb the information of why there is such a big hype about these virtual worlds. I found that second life was too complicated for me, just has my brother said it would be. The first time I had started, instead of me using a random character to begin with, and then decide to develop my own, I began with creating my own character first, and now I have problems looking exceptional.

My character is running around with no clothes on! Which is not good!!...though it was my first time on second life, I had been on it for 3hrs and all I had accomplished was developing my ears, eyes, mouth and nose (and it still didn’t look nothing like me!). I had problems creating the hairstyle I wanted, which was annoying me because I would have some random bald patch trying to hide somewhere (though it’s not funny I have to laugh). Then after all that, I accidently pressed the random button and lost my 3hrs work worth, absolutely (sorry but I have to say this twice) absolutely! Not happy!!!

After finding it annoying to develop my character, I had given up and decided to change to a different virtual world.

Second Life – (BOOO!)

Second life is like a second life, for real! So in depth, it becomes complicated to handle. After trying to work out and understand Second Life, I began to get bored and then gradually gave up. To tell you the true I was getting pissed off of being in the same old situation. I couldn’t develop me character, in the way I wanted to plus I didn’t really explore the environment much. I had spoken to a few people in the course about their character and most of them said they had chosen a random character (something I should have considered!!) I then tried to select a random character just so I could begin exploring second life, but then that wasn’t working right neither, so I limited myself and did not attempt to bother with developing my character. So I’m still walking around naked with a beard on my face! (which I find weird because it’s on female settings!).

So I guess I will have to explore another virtual environment, by doing this maybe I can compare them both and note down the pros and cons about both environments. I think the next one I will try out is Doppelganger, seems to be more stylish anyway!

New Brief…and I’m not talking pants!!! -20/12/08

Just a few days ago we were given a new project, and to tell you the true I like the sound of things so far. We have to create a personal identity package that will include five virtual elements, three of these elements have already been given, and the other two will be chosen by our choice. The three elements given include creating a 3D avatar, an audiovisual, and a logo. All elements have to be presented within a showcase/box, which we also have to create.

I feel I am going to enjoy myself throughout the development of the project, exploring areas I have yet to cover, finding a lot more inspiration and also developing skills. I know I will struggle but that’s just apart of the task. I am liking the sounds of the new project because I get to spend some time working in and 3D, an area I need more practise in!... but also, I feel like this is more my area to express my ideas, it has more to do with drawing, designing and developing the ideas, we have in mind, the whole built up to the final outcome is what I think I will enjoy most of all, (not sure if I will cope working in 3D though!).

I am quite excited about exploring a virtual world, wanting to know how things work in this sector. The thought of creating your own character, world and business as well as meeting new people, in a virtual way, seems quite interesting. The only virtual world I have heard about is Second Life, my brother had told me about it a year before, and said it is very in depth, whether it was to create your character, business or just to enjoy yourself. A few weeks after, I read their home page and I tried to sign up, but it never seemed to work and I saw it as a sign for me not to sign up, so I left it! Besides I never really had a reason to go on there anyway, but now I have! Yay!

We have a few virtual worlds to choose from, such as Second Life, Virtual Doppelganger and my first choice is obviously going to be Second Life, and already I have a feeling it won’t be what I’m expecting (in a bad way!)… I have no reasons of why I think this.

About the second essay, and a few comments on the first…-21/01/09

Yesterday we receive our 2nd essay brief, and it actually sounds better than the first one we had been given…well I thinks its because I will enjoy this one better. The first essay was about The Designs Process and clearly stating what the process was, on the other hand this essay is about choosing three professionals from the area we decide to chose and study in level two, explaining why we have chosen these practitioners, talking about our influences from their work, and clearly explaining what pathway we intend to take. I think this essay will help us understand why we have chosen the specific pathway and help us make the right choice, so we don’t waste time developing our skills in the wrong area.

Relating to the first, I believe I have learnt a lot from my last essay to realize what I need to do to succeed the 2nd one. In the last essay I believe the essay was misunderstood, and therefore a lot of information was missing, also time became an issue for me, leaving it to late to discuss my research and findings, (the only things I have to say about my grade is that it was better than what I expected!). Enough of the excuses!.. I have now realized were I went wrong and learning from my mistakes I will surely overcome these within my second essay (well hopefully!).

For this essay I have a few practitioners in mind. The pathway I
intend to choose, in that area, I am influenced by many. So in the essay it will give me a harder decision of why I have chose these specific professionals. One of the practitioners I have chosen is Pixar, one of my greatest influences, the reason why I love animation now. My favourite Pixar film from when I was younger is A Bugs Life, and I still love it now, another interesting film is Nemo. The reason I admire both of these films is because of their stories, which held fun and jokes, sad and serious moments, but most of all it was for the way they caught the right movements, emotions and expressions for each of the characters created, which I found amazing.

Right, its been a long time since I've up dated my journal (my apologises people)!...reason being, I had a few issues posting my entries up, I was messing around with the layout trying to make my blog look presentable and it must of (or I must of)messed up the settings, and it became messed up and for a while stopping me from postting anything. I was going to create a new blog but I deciced to try this one out one more time and it decide to work like nothing happened!!! which is good because it saves me the hastle of creating another blog, but it also makes me look stupid! because theres no evidence of any errors, so I still don't know what the problem was =[

I am going to update my journal with some of my work, backtracking a little to inform all of what was alreadly suppose to be posted, but all of this will properly be done in one big post or maybe a few!...

Three point lighting

On the journal, write a short text that explains what you have learned about a) three point lighting and b) safely when using lights.

Three point lighting
To be honest I have already been taught three point lighting, in my previous courses but just to state the basics…

Key light- is known as your main light source
Fill light- becomes your secondary light source and is placed
opposite the key light
Back light- is the third light source and is placed behind the
subject, creating a 3D look
Diffusions- diffusions are used to soften any light in use within the
composition. But diffusions are mainly used to alter the
colour of a source to create an effect.

Safety when using lights
Basically the safety when using lighting is important, and that lights that are going to be used are checked properly before use, to prevent any problems/incidents while filming.
Check to see:-
· If each light kit is complete with its own wires, stand, diffuse fillers and extension lead/s if required
· If the bulb/s is the right watt required
· That the switch and the bulb/s are not faulty, using the safety check method

Other accessories needed for safety are:-
· Extension leads
· Rubber mats
· Gloves

Extension leads are useful when using lighting; it stops you from pulling the lights wire to its limit, as it is important to place all wires on the floor and cover them with rubber mats.

Rubber mats are used to cover any wires that are in the way of the walking area whilst recording, and by placing the rubber mats in position prevents any accidents from happening

Gloves become very important when handling lighting, while lights are in use gloves should always be worn while operating them as lights are goings to get very hot.

Day and Light: a day out about colour and light...

As part of our task we had to attend an exhibition displayed at the Djanogly Art Gallery, to view a collection of works from a few artists, associated with colour and light. Although some of their work were simply in style, all seemed very interested and understanding. So after having a quick look around, there became many pieces of work that appealed to my interest. I enjoyed the creations from Richard K. Webb and Rebecca Partridge mostly, because their work was very eye catching, using colour in a very effective way. The piece of work I have chosen to write about is “The Dreaming” created by Rebecca Partridge. This piece was not the best from her collection, but displayed the most meaning (or at least it makes you think you understand the meaning). The artist created a disco like atmosphere, by using bright colours amongst a dark background. This image reminds me of when you close your eyes after to much light and all you see is colour spots. The use of colour has become the subject in the series of paintings alongside shape and form, and being effective in style adds character, applying movement as well as light and space, and although the colours are vivid overlapping them changes established light and also created new colours.

Maybe this is what she wanted to achieve, the given title “The Dreaming” makes me wonder the light used at the centre of the image was the waking point of Rebecca’s dream. Concentrating on the centre of the picture almost assumes thee as though the oval shapes are moving towards the centre and as if the colours are being affected, creating a form of contrast alongside a intangible narrative within the final concept.

Multimedia Technology and it’s Development

Technology in the last few years, has we all discovered, has developed dramatically. The inspiration for all technology I would say comes from the society we now live in. Due to it becoming so technical, all technology produced needs to be in the requirement of high quality production.
From the old traditional way of doing things, technology has now taken over various area of how we do things. Whether it’s from waking up in the morning or washing clothes by hand to writing letters to communicate or even drawing by hand to create a story, all these events now are replaced by technology, having the use of technical devices such as alarm clocks, washing machines, mobiles phones, computers and programmes. I believe that various areas, which are more on a professional level, such as animation, video production and education areas are highly driven by technology, simply because a new source equal to new ideas and inspiration and enables us to act freely whenever it comes to creativeness. Overall technology is known to make things in society easier, and develop, only to create better quality and greater performances from the basic original design.

Whenever it came to technology i was always behind, lacking of most recent tecnology devices available. With technology developing so rapidly, it was hard to keep with upgraded versions and simply kept aware of the basics. Occasionally this applied simply because I could not afford them or they just did not seem that important to me. Growing up, my interest now lie in art and design and pretty much everything creative, so equipment and technology are important tools for me to express myself creatively, and it is important for me to keep updated.

My 1st Pixilation

I have to backtrack myself a little for you to understand my starting piont. Right, a few weeks ago as our first task, we was to create a animation clip using still pictures. I found this activity very interesting, and was well ready to take part. I was unaware of this technique, and have already learnt something new. Fascinated with how the way things work, the key element is to create something that a video camera can not capture, in terms of style and creativity. With this in mind, i have already thought of a range of ideas. My first idea, initally, was to do dancing shoes (which is still under progress!) but because it is so time consuming, i had replaced it with another idea i had in mind, to complete my task on time.
My pixilation is about me, returning back from my where abouts and finding that my room is a tip! Having no time to tidy it, i sit and try to do some work, but i accidentally fall asleep. While asleep i dream of my room in great thoughts, but then i awake to find out it was just a dream.

What did i do in the first week?

lol, not much really. situations are hard, experience is new, so i hav'nt had the confidence to go out and explore! i am willing to.. dont worry, i just need time to settle in.

What do i want out of this course?
Well, first of all, i want to get a brief feel of all aspects within the course, and getting to try out new things, i have yet to experience. Im well into animation, especailly character design and want to built my confidence and became use to using animation softwares.
